CONNECT WITH CACADU: STATUS AND PHASE 2 DESIGN
Background:
In the interests of developing human capital, the Planning Unit in conjunction with CDM's IT Department and the Municipal Managers' office designed and implemented a program called Connect with Cacadu (CwC) in the 2007 - 2008 financial year.
CwC is a Cacadu District Municipality Project (CDM) conceptualised from the lack of IT services, education and skills acquisition opportunities that has been identified via various interactive processes at local levels.
CwC is the installation of Computer Hardware and Software at local libraries and other potential access points for free use by community members.
Those areas with existing ADSL internet coverage were prioritized for connection. These include, Kouga, Koukamma, Blue Crane Route, Camdeboo, Sunday's River Valley and Ndlambe.
To date, 14 libraries have received a total of 92 computers and there are 4 300 registered users.
The 2009 / 2010 Financial Year will see the connection of a further 10 Libraries. Areas which were unable to be connected in 2008 will be prioritized in the 2009 - 2010 financial year.
Those libraries that have been identified for connection are:
Library | Local Municipality | Number of Computers |
Alexandria | Ndlambe | 8 |
Ekuphumleni | Ndlambe | 8 |
Fingo Village | Makana | 8 |
Nomathamsanqua | Sundays River | 6 |
Valencia | Sundays River | 4 |
Kirkwood | Sundays River | 6 |
Mubyiseli Nkosinkulu | Kouga | 1 |
Kareedouw | Koukamma | 6 |
Patensie | Kouga | To be visited |
Umasizakhe | Camdeboo | 6 |
Unfortunately, Ikwezi and Baviaans Local Municipalities still do not have ADSL capabilities and thus cannot support the Connect with Cacadu system.
Phase 2: Adult Assist:
Phase 1 of CwC focuses on the assimilation of computer skills and the enhancement of school based education. As the CwC system has been designed with the capacity to meet changing needs and demands, Phase 2 is intent on assisting the adult user.
The primary objective of the ‘Phase 2' rollout is to formulate and present a system of researched electronic modules relevant to the preparedness of the tertiary learner and adult education / information requirements and display the content in modular course format. At present this phase is in design form which the team anticipates to rollout at the beginning of next year.
